William Ellis School / Lycée de la Vallée
de Chevreuse
Ms Marguerite Freeman / Mme Verdier
Background
William Ellis is a comprehensive boys’ school in North London.
24 Year 10 pupils have been sending emails to seconde pupils at
Lycée de la Vallée de Chevreuse in Versailles. This
email exchange has concentrated on exchanging personal details.
Progress to date
William Ellis boys involved in the project have found it to be
very motivating and to have put language learning in a real context
for them (particularly as girls are involved…). Replies were
received to emails sent in the Easter term, but, unfortunately,
this term our pupils have had no response.
Future Plans
The teacher running the project for William Ellis has been unable
to contact her colleague in France although she has tried several
times, and so we have not been able to plan or implement any new
plans. The French colleague is not the same person who attended
the conference in Putney and this may be one of the reasons why
the link has broken down.
Ideas and Recommendations
The linguistic ability of the Versailles pupils is much more advanced
than that of our comprehensive intake. As there was reluctance to
have pupils from very different age groups corresponding with each
other, there are problems with advancing the project to a linguistically
more advanced level.
