Progress Report
We successfully managed to go and visit our partner school in Paris
from Thursday 13th March to Monday 17th 2003. The aim was for our
SNAG (School Nutrition Action Group) to go and find out what nutrition
at school meant in France in our partner school.
Our group was composed of 6 students (1 Year 12, 3 Year 10 and
2 Year 9 students) as well as 4 members of staff, a deputy head
in charge of SNAG, our chef, a teacher in charge of Beacon school
initiatives and PSHE, and myself.
We spent Friday at school.
In the morning, the French students gave us a talk in English about
food and drinks, dietary habits in France and we also gave a PowerPoint
presentation about our SNAG in French.
We, teachers, then had a long discussion about PSHE (drugs and
sex problems with the "Assistante sociale" and the nurse),
discipline (with conseiller d'éducation) and management with
the deputy head teacher.
Then, after a tour of the school, we headed towards the canteen
where our chef and students could compare food, see what was on
the menu as well as what equipment they have in France etc...
After lunch, our students went and had a chat with French students
in the playground for a while and then, we all attended a Biology
class in English (!) part of the new initiative in France called
"itinéraires de découvertes": very impressive!
A whole 2-hour lesson conducted by two Biology teachers in English
for Year 8 students (cinquièmes) on the topic of perfume
and how to extract the essence of an orange. Our students took part.
Saturday and Sunday were spent visiting places of interest in Paris
and practising our French...
The trip was a success. We all enjoyed it (both French and English
students and teachers) and I know I have now fostered strong relationships
on which to build on next year.
Next step would be for our counterparts to come and visit us and
develop an E-mail link from September.
