Background
At the conference held at Elliot School in January of this year,
we discussed what we wanted to get out of this project during the
academic year. We decided that since two teachers from each school
were running the project, we would involve a class taught by each
teacher. We therefore set up a pen friend link between the pupils
in a year eight class and a cinqième class, and between those
in a year nine class and a quatrième class, the aim being
to send bilingual letters in order that both sets of students could
practise writing in the foreign language advising their partner
of any mistakes made, but could also develop their reading skills
in a foreign language.
The pupils from Little Lever first sent introductory letters to
France at the end of February of this year. They received a reply
in March. Some pupils sent photographs which were very much appreciated.
At the beginning of April, the pupils from Little Lever sent another
letter in which they discussed Easter traditions and celebrations.
Many included Easter chocolate for their pen friends to taste. They
received a final letter back from the French students at the beginning
of June which explained all about their holiday plans and managed
to return a letter the following week on the same topic, just before
the holidays started in France.
The pupils have enjoyed having this communication link and have
eagerly awaited the arrival of each letter. We are hoping that this
link continues into the next academic year and that there may be
some communication via e-mail.
